Life Drawing for Everyone

Stroud Life Drawing is a friendly drop-in life drawing session running on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Centre for Science and Art (CSA), opposite Stroud library on Lansdown. The sessions are relaxed and informal and artists of all abilities are welcome. A typical session will include a mix of A-level students, beginners and amateur or professional artists all sharing the same challenge of working from the human figure.

Tuesday

Tutored evening sessions which operate on a drop-in basis, so there is no need to book and pay for a series of sessions in advance; just pay for those you attend. Your tutor, Keith Symonds (who has twenty-one years experience in teaching drawing) will guide you through the drawing process without imposing any particular style or medium. Tuesdays are ideal for those wanting to learn the fundamentals of life drawing or anyone who simply wants to work from one of our many life models but cannot make the Saturday sessions.

Saturday

Untutored drop-in sessions which give you the freedom to work in the medium & style of your choice. That said, I am always happy to offer advice. The emphasis is on longer pose work so there are typically just one or two poses in an afternoon. Every Saturday there is a 20min break for free tea, biscuits and a sociable chance to chat. The urn is also boiling before the session for anyone who should turn up early to claim their favourite place!

Sunday

Untutored, clothed portrait sessions are held on the first Sunday of every month and provide an ideal opportunity to work from one of our many models at close range over a three hour period.

‘Single Pose Sunday’ life-drawing events are also held on an occasional basis, with dates and details posted on the Upcoming Events page.

Fully Equipped Art Studio

We work in a purpose-built art studio equipped with easels, chairs, tall stools, drawing boards, paper, charcoal and pencils, so you really can just turn up and  draw. Of course you're also welcome to bring your own materials if you wish. For those who want to work in acrylics, ink or watercolour there is also a large sink and running water in the room.

Times

Tuesday:  7 - 9pm
Saturday:  2 - 5pm
Sunday portrait sessions:  1.30pm – 4.30pm
Single Pose Sunday sessions:  9.30am – 4.30pm

No need to book for Tuesday or Saturday. Just turn up. We start drawing promptly so it's advisable that you allow 10-15mins to get settled in.
